Fire destroys triple decker home in Providence


low 80s. (DN) AS WE MENTIONED… A LOT TO COVER. WE BEGIN WITH BREAKING OVERNIGHT NEWS IN PROVIDENCE. TAKE A LOOK… A HOME FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES… FORCING MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE OUT INTO THE STREETS. (PL) FIREFIGHTERS INITIALLY THOUGHT THERE WERE SOME RESIDENTS TRAPPED INSIDE. BUT AS OF LAST CHECK… IT APPEARS EVERYONE ESCAPED THIS INFERNO. (DN) EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER ALEXANDRA LESLIE JOINS US LIVE FROM THE SCENE ON ALTHEA STREET. (AL) THIS STARTED AROUND 1 THIS MORNING… EARLIER THIS MORNING FIRE OFFICIALS TOLD US WHILE THERE IS *SOME STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY TO THE BUILDING… THEY’RE TREADING CAREFULLY, AND YOU CAN SEE WHY. THIS MORNING CREWS ARE OPENING UP THE INTERIOR WALLS TO GET THE LAST FOR THE FIRE OUT… TAKE A LOOK AT THE FIRE WHEN IT FIRST STARTED.. THIS HOUSE WAS *FULLY INVOLVED* WE’RE TOLD THERE WAS HEAVY FIRE ON THE FIRST FLOOR, AND IT QUICKLY WENT UP ONE OF THE SIDES OF THE HOUSE ALL THE WAY TO THE ROOF. THE FIRE QUICKLY WENT TO A SECOND ALARM… AND WAS FOURTH ALARM AT LAST CHECK. DEPUTY CHIEF STEVEN HOULE SAYS THIS FIRE PROGRESSED… AND WHILE THEY USUALLY HAVE AN INTERIOR ATTACK, THE FIRE GOT TOO AGGRESSIVE AND CREWS WERE NOT ABLE TO GET TO THE THIRD FLOOR. HERE’S WHAT THEY DID NEXT. THE COMPANIES COULD NOT MAKE THE THIRD FLOOR SO I ORDERED AN EVACUATION OF THE BUILDING. WE WENT TO MASSIVE STREAMS AND KNOCKED DOWN THE VOLUME OF FIRE. THEN COMPANIES ARE IN WITH HAIR LINES GETTING SPOT FIRES. (AL) WE’RE TOLD A DOG DID NOT SURVIVE. THE GOOD NEWS RIGHT NOW– FIRE OFFICIALS SAY NO INJURIES TO ANY PEOPLE… ABOUT 15 PEOPLE, OR THREE FAMILIES LIVE IN THIS HOME.
